Welcome Spring with the Thunder Run 5K
If you’re located in northern Virginia and looking for a great way to get out and enjoy the warming temperatures and welcome spring, there’s nothing better than registering for the Thunder Run 5K put on by The Fun Runz, and benefitting Good News Jail and Prison Ministry. The event will be held rain or shine, and includes both a 5K and 1K fun run/walk. Get your registration in now for this event!
What’s It About?
The Thunder 5K is actually two races/walks in one. The first is the 5K, which will cover just over three miles. The second is a 1K, which is considerably shorter and ideal for kids as well as adults with mobility challenges. The event will be held at Fort Hunt Park, and the start/finish line will be located in Picnic Area E of the park. The park is located just off George Washington Parkway, just outside of Alexandria, Virginia. All proceeds from entry fees will go toward supporting Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, so it’s certainly for a worthy cause.
The race will be held on Saturday, April 11th. It begins promptly at 8 am.
Packet pickup will be held from 7 am until 7:55 am at the park. Preregistering is the only way to ensure that you’re able to get in on this race, as there will be NO paper registration forms on hand at the park. The organizers stress the importance of registering early. There are no refunds offered.
Both the 5K and the 1K race are stroller friendly, so parents with small children and babies are welcome to bring their little ones to enjoy the fun as well. However, while strollers are allowed, headphones are “strongly discouraged”. This is because racers will need to be able to hear announcements and directions from the race organizers, and headphones can prevent this. Pets are allowed, but must be leashed at all times during the event.
What’s in the Packet?
Racers will be able to pick up their packets Saturday morning prior to the race. Each packet will include entry to the race, as well as a commemorative t-shirt. Shirts are unisex, and standard sized. Only those registered prior to April 7 will be guaranteed a t-shirt. All others will receive a shirt if supplies last. For 5K participants only, the packet will include a racer number, as well as a shoe tag (chip for racing). The 1K race is not chip monitored.
About the Racecourse
The race will be run within the confines of Fort Hunt Park, which has paved, flat roads. Much of the way is screened by trees, providing shade if necessary, as well as lovely scenic views for participants. The 5K race will take two laps around the park (clockwise, as per park policy).
Parking can be found throughout the park and is free. There are also restrooms available throughout the park, including at the start/finish line.
If that sounds like a fun day to you, sign up for the race today!
