Arlington continues to support nationally recognized smart growth principles with transit oriented development, concentrating density around transit stations in this densely populated area of the country.  Their residents and workers are served by 54 Capital Bikeshare stations, 13 ART bus routes, 11 Metrorail stations and 86 miles of bicycle routes and jogging trails to accommodate a wide range of options for their work and personal needs. This makes Arlington a car-optional community.  30,000 combined station entries and exits, are an average weekday, at The Pentagon and Pentagon City Metrorail, making them the most heavily used in the area.

Arlington National Cemetary and Iwo Jima Memorial

Arlington is also known for its historical memorials.  With the Arlington National Cemetery, the last home of more than 400,000 veterans, active duty service members and their families, inclusive of the Tomb of the Unknowns, which is marked by the eternal flame and guarded around the clock.  Just outside its entrance is the Marine Corps Memorial also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial.  It is dedicated to all the personnel of the United States Marine Corp who have died in the defense of the United States since 1775.  The Pentagon Memorial, remembering the 184 men and women who lost their lives due to the attacks on 911 and the United States Air Force Memorial displayed on the grounds of Fort Myer, honoring all of the men and women of the United States Air Force and its predecessor organizations for their service and sacrifices are also in the vicinity making there lots to reflect upon in Arlington.
