Clifton VA & Oakton VA are historic neighborhoods
Protected from the surrounding sprawl of Washington D.C., Clifton is 30 miles away. With its population of 282, this area is small and quaint. In the late 1970’ and early 1980’s when development was edging near, they passed an ordinance which would allow only one building on a 5-acre parcel, that had not already been divided. This has created a beautiful, densely forested to the eastern and southern sections while the portions of the north became equestrian areas. This feature also makes it very appealing to those wanting to get away from the metropolitan area.
Many men of national importance have called Clifton home, including United States Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Theodore Roosevelt. First lady Nancy Reagan often frequented here for a retreat and it was called “Paradise Springs”. With historic homes dating back as far as 1871, the U.S. Department of Interior declared it a National Historic District in 1985.
