The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park is a regional park in Northern Virginia. The park’s primary feature, an asphalt-surfaced paved rail trail that runs through densely populated urban and suburban communities as well as through rural areas is known as the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail (abbreviated as W&OD Trail). With the trail being 44.8 miles long and cutting right through the center of Vienna, walkers, bikers, runners and roller skaters use it not only for physical exercise, but many use it for their avenue of transportation. Most of the trail is on top of the rail bed of the former Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, which closed in 1968. The park authority has placed alongside the paved trail a series of mile markers and numerous descriptives, of the historical and natural features of the park and its environment.
