Round Hill offers views of the blue ridge mountains

Round Hill is a town in scenic western Loudoun County, Virginia, with a population of about 600 residents.  The town is located at the crossroads of Virginia Routes 7 and 719, lying at the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains, approximately 45 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.  “Round Hill” was named for the 910 foot high hill, located two miles northeast of the town square, which was used during the American Civil War as a lookout post by both Confederate and Union troops because of its view of the Loudoun Valley and Blue Ridge mountains.  On Feb. 5, 1900, Virginia’s General Assembly incorporated the town of Round Hill.

Washington & Old Dominion railroad brought Weekend visitors from Washington, DC in days past

From 1875 to 1896, Round Hill was the terminus of the Washington & Old Dominion train line which carried many to and from the nation’s capitol.  Whether it was for business or pleasure, the migration of residents from the District caused many of the local homes became boarding houses and inns to accommodate.  Visitors would pay approximately 25 cents for a round trip ticket and take the 2-21/2 hour long train ride.  They desired to get out of the city and escape the hot, unhealthy summertime environment of the nation’s capital and enjoy the splendid views and the “clean mountain air.”   During this time, Round Hill prospered. Several stores were opened, along with a Blacksmith shop, a wheelwright shop and a livery stable.  The railway also allowed for the local farmers to get their agricultural products into the city, prospering their business.
