10 Items You Should Have on Hand This Winter

Winter hasn’t even officially begun yet and we are already seeing temperatures way below freezing. While we might not have a white Christmas, you can probably guess that it will be very cold. Whether you are traveling this holiday season or simply want to be prepared, here are 10 items you should keep close at hand this winter that could literally save your life.

These items can be placed in backpacks in the trunk or back of a car and/or a convenient place in your house as well.

#1. Bottled water. It’s important to have at least one or two bottles of water for every member of your family close at hand.

#2. Extra candles, flashlights, matches or lighters. Even though it’s getting darker, if you are stranded on the side of the road candles can produce up to 85 BTUs per hour and can be used to melt snow for water, signal for help, or light the way.

#3. First aid kit. A good first aid kit should be in your car at all times and one in your house. It should include things such as bandages, antiseptic cream, Gauze pads, adhesive tape, tweezers, gloves, and a breathing barrier. It’s also important to have hand sanitizer and a bulb suction device for flushing out wounds.

#4. Emergency blankets. Emergency or even regular blankets can help you keep as warm as possible. Space blankets or the emergency blankets are very thin so you can stack several of them in your car. It’s also a good idea to have hand warmers that are activated when needed.

#5. Duct tape. Duct tape has been known to do thousands of jobs from patching leaks in your car to reattaching parts of the car that may have come loose during bumps and potholes plus you never know when you need a good, strong adhesive.

#6. Shovel and broom. These are important items to have in your car at all times especially if you are out at holiday parties and you get stuck. You can use the shovel and the broom to clear off snow so that you can move your car.

#7. Pocketknife. A pocket knife, Leatherman or other multi-used tool is imperative to keeping your car at all times. You can use it for fixing minor car repairs, cutting seatbelts if people get stuck or breaking a window in case of an emergency.

#8. Whistle. A whistle is an important item to keep in your car as if the worst should happen and you go off an embankment, you can at least whistle for help if nobody could see the light.

#9. Paper roadmaps. While user phones now to do just about everything, if your phone breaks or runs out of battery and you are lost in the woods somewhere, a paper map can certainly come in handy. It’s important to just stick one in the glove box of your local area in case of emergencies.

#10. Wipes. Having a package of Wet Ones, baby wipes, or flushable wipes is just a good idea to have in the car at all times. You can clean up hands after working on the car or sanitize your hands for eating.

Keep these 10 items handy at all times and you never know when it could save your life.
