Northern Virginia is the Economic Engine of the State

Northern Virginia has been described as the “economic engine of the state.” With the federal government being home to numerous agencies in the area; the Central Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon (which headquarters the Department of Defense), Marine Corps Base Quantico, the United States Patent and Trademark Office,  United States Geological Survey as well as Fort Myer and Fort Belvoir serve as major employers in the area.  Another important factor to the region’s economy is the government contracting. There are over 600 federal contractors alone in Arlington.  These contractors also have the highest weekly paid wages of any major jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

Providing other opportunities of employment in Northern Virginia are the various data centers, which carry more than 50% of the nation’s internet traffic. Verisign, the manager of the .com and .net domains are based here as well.  The area is also home to half of the state’s Fortune 500 companies, including Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation ( Freddie Mac), Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Capital One, AES Corporation,Computer Sciences Corporation, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC),NII Holdings, Gannett Company and Booz Allen Hamilton.

Known for its affluence, this region hosts one of the largest cities or counties in the nation that has a median household income of more than $100,000.  Arlington and Fairfax counties combined accommodate over half of the regions population.  Loudoun County and Arlington County is said to have the highest concentration of 25-34 year olds with incomes in excess of $100,000 in the nation.

With 55.5% of the residents holding a bachelor‘s degree or higher, this area is very well educated.  Nineteen of the region’s high schools appeared in Newsweek’s America’s Top Public High Schools with Thomas Jefferson being ranked number one. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is an award winning magnet school in Fairfax County.  It has been stated that 90% of the schools here are good, but 80% of them are excellent.

Northern Virginia’s Universities and Colleges

Virginia only hosting a handful of universities and colleges, Northern Virginia has the largest and most well known, George Mason University.  Other higher education institutes are the University of Virginia, George Washington University and Virginia Tech not to exclude Virginia Commonwealth University.

Transportation in the Northern Virginia Region

A wonderful asset to living in Northern Virginia is its transportation network.  With Washington Dulles International and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airports within its boundaries, there is an extensive network of railways, bus lines, subways, expressways and interstate highways to help you navigate where you need to go.  With traffic being congested and parking expensive, using the public transportation system can be a less stressful and convenient way to get around.  Rather it be to work, shopping, a sporting event or sightseeing, it is sure to save you time and money.  The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority  (The Metro) has routes taking you from downtown Washington D.C. to the Capital Beltway, while the Virginia Railway Express runs Monday through Friday only, providing transportation from Broad Run Airport in Bristow Virginia and Fredericksburg directly to Union Station in Washington DC.
