Sterling is located in eastern Loudoun County, Virginia. Sterling is 26 miles northwest of Washington, DC in Northern VA, off Leesburg Pike. Home to many commuters to points east, Sterling is well situated. Most of the property that Sterling is today, was 1,762 acres of farmland until the the beginning of 1962. The Dulles International Airport and the extension of water and sewer lines to the airport began to a change the landscape.

Marvin T. Broyhill, Jr. and his father decided to buy and incorporated Sterling Park Development Corporation late in 1961.  Between April 28 and December 29 of that year, they purchased 14 parcels for $2,115,784 and an additional 226 acres, along Route 7, for $384,200, making it $1700.00 per acre.

With the development of Sterling Park east of Route 28, and they had to build their own through road which is today’s Sterling Boulevard. “The Park,” as it had come to be known, had reached 5,000 by that period of time.  One of the first planned communities built in eastern Loudoun County, Sterling Park became a popular place for government workers to settle with their families outside the Capital area.  Creating quite a community within itself, Sterling Park contained a variety of businesses, churches, parks, a community center, a semi-private golf club featuring two pools and tennis courts, and schools. It is the home of the Park View High School Patriots, most storied athletic reputation in Loudoun County, and have won more state titles than any other Loudoun County school.

Sugarland Run HOMES

Being designed after the popular Sterling Park, Sugarland Run was built in the 1970’s.  It was one of the few areas that was built in contrast to the surrounding colonial style neighborhoods,  with their California contemporary style houses consisting of vaulted ceilings and modern exteriors. The area included townhomes, apartments and single family homes with large lots and ample green space with most homes backed up to paved walking trails, woods or streams.  The area boasted a large community swimming pool area, a playground and access to Willow Lake, a man made lake and park with over 26 miles of walking paths.

They are home to the Dominion High School Titans, a designated the host school of the Loudoun Academy of Science, which is an appointed part-time magnet school program for Loudoun County, similar to well known Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia.

Sterling is home to many prominent businesses.  Neustar, Inc., Electronic Instrumentation and Technology Inc., and Paxfire Inc. have headquarters based out of here.   Alcatel Networks Inc., Tetra Tech Geo Trans Inc., HR Solutions LLC, M. C. Dean Inc., National Electronics Warranty Corp, N.E.W. Customer Service Companies Inc., and Orbital Science all employee over 1,000 people and are in Sterling.  The National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office LWX, serving the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area, as well as the Sterling Field Support Center, the National Weather Service’s test, research, and evaluation center for weather instruments are all within the city limits of Sterling creating a viable employment area and a median household income is $86,743.
